When I arrived at the family home early Thursday morning, everyone looked bright and breezy considering the late night partying. The priest came to facilitate the Haldi Ceremony. This was great fun! It started off very calm and a bright yellow paste was very gently dabbed onto Naveen’s brow. This progressed to watching him being attacked by his groomsmen, stripping off his clothes and smearing him full of bright yellow paste!
In Indian culture, haldi or turmeric holds a special place of honour. It’s medicinal qualities as an anti-inflammatory, anti depressant, reduces an upset stomach, relieves anxiety and a skin purifier makes this a sacred paste that is used to cleanse the body, remove evil spirits and prepare the groom for his wedding day.
I do love a cup of turmeric tea at bedtime, though I’ll never look at it the same again!!!!
